Characterization of Indoor Air Quality of Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State

Authors:

Abstract

Globally, including in Nigeria, air quality has been a significant concern. Both indoor and outdoor air quality are monitored. The study's focus was indoor air quality. This study's objective was to evaluate the air quality of fifty indoor locations on the FUT Bosso campus in Minna, including five classrooms, one male hostel, eighteen labs, ten offices, one restroom, two libraries, one stairwell, eleven lecture halls, and one café. Formaldehyde (HCHO), Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC), PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 were measured using a multifunction air detector (Model: WP6910 made-in-China: Detector Description). According to the manufacturer's instructions, a Multifunction Air Detector was utilized for the assessment, and a Mini GPS was employed to pinpoint the locations. HCHO (0.00-0.16 mg/m3), TVOC (0.00-0.55 mg/m3), PM1.0 (0.41-42 µg/m3), PM2.5 (0.53-44 µg/m3), and PM10 (0.61-51 µg/m3) were the findings. The outcomes fell short of the WHO and EPA's annual pollution recommendations. The toxicity potential (TP) was less than 1. Even if the areas appeared safe, it is advised that adequate ventilation be supplied and that the inside be continuously monitored.
