Abstract

The removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) from wastewater using activated and unactivated Annona senegalensis bark was investigated. Chemical activation of the carbon with 85% phosphoric acid (H3PO4) was employed for the preparation of activated carbon. The effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, particle size, contact time and temperature were studied to identify the adsorption capacity of the activated and unactivated carbon. The percentage removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) were found to be dependent on all the factors studied. For the activated carbon, the effect of adsorbent dosage indicated that the percentage removal for Pb(II) ranged from 36.67 to 73.33% and Ni(II) from 31.48 to 69.20%. For unactivated, Pb(II) ranged from 27.50 to 65.42% and Ni(II) ranged from 19.51 to 59.39%. The effects of particle size, contact time and temperature showed similar trend except for pH that showed increasing removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) with increasing pH from 2.0 to around 7.0 before showing a decline. The equilibrium data was best described by Freundlich followed by Temkin model. Pseudo-second order and Elovich equations gave better fits of the adsorption process compared to pseudo-first order. It was concluded that activated and unactivated carbon derived from Annona senegalensis bark can be used as low-cost adsorbents for the removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) from water.
